AlertEnterprise CEO, Jasvir Gill Presents Nationwide Webinar on Insider Threat as part of the ISACA e-Symposium
Sometimes the biggest threat is from the inside. More incidents related to fraud, theft and sabotage actually are perpetrated by insiders. Keeping business operations running smoothly requires that employees and contractors be given privileges and adequate access. Many organizations are just living with the inherent risks thinking that there is no solution to balance the two conflicting needs. Jasvir Gill presented a unique risk management capability that aggregates blended threats from IT Systems, Physical Access Control Systems and Critical Control Systems and uncovers previously undetectable risks. By analyzing and correlating information like access behavior patterns, knowledge of the types of assets accessed and time of day information, risks can be determined and access denied for those who would pose an intentional or unintentional threat. As an example, a warehouse supervisor denied promotion and flagged as disgruntled would cause an alert to be generated if he used his electronic badge to access a chemical storage facility after hours and logged into the inventory control software as well, thereby eliminating a potential theft of material that would be almost impossible to detect. AlertEnterprise correlates risks across multiple systems via a risk engine that can assimilate users, roles, access rights, transactions and permissions across a multitude of enterprise applications that can include major ERP systems, Identity and Access Management Systems (IAM), Governance, Risk and Compliance Systems and HR Systems.

AlertEnterprise to Exhibit at the SAP GRC 2009 Europe Conference, Prague, Czechoslovakia
Following the theme of simplifying SAP security, AlertEnterprise showcased its visualization solutions at SAP GRC Europe Conference. While compliance regulations and audit requirements are making business managers more accountable, their ability to respond is hindered by the fact that GRC and IDM systems are complex and very technical. Risk and compliance aspects are generally dealt with in silos and reports from these applications are hard to understand. Business managers must rely on interpretation by IT security professionals as to the extent of risk to the business. Organizations need to track who has access to critical systems, applications and data. Equally important is deciding how much access to provide and assessing the risk prior to provisioning user access. Evolving trends to include physical access controls add further complexity that today’s applications are not setup to handle. Visualization software from AlertEnterprise applied as a common business layer can work with existing GRC and IDM systems to enable existing users, roles, transactions, authorization codes, directory information and entitlements to be rendered visually, delivering intuitive decision criteria that business users can readily understand.

AlertEnterprise Highlights Critical Infrastructure, Control System and Smart Grid Security at ISA Expo, Houston
Protecting critical infrastructure starts at the process control level. Applications and systems controlling large industrial and infrastructure processes are complex and can be dispersed over large geographies. Most of these processes run non-stop and are fine-tuned to deliver performance and reliability. Modifying or replacing any of these systems (e.g. .processes controlling chemical plants, oil and gas production, pipeline transport of oil and gas, production and distribution of electricity etc.), usually only occurs after a 10-15 year use cycle. Many of these systems were not designed with security in mind. However modifying these processes to introduce security after the fact is not viable. Most of these involve large scale critical assets that need to monitor for both physical access as well as cyber intrusion. Today this occurs in silos and for the most as unrelated processes in different departments within the organization. Over the last decade infrastructure companies in an effort to optimize operational efficiency and to merge operational plant information into enterprise operations have integrated plant systems (typically managed by Plant IT Departments) with the corporate networks (managed by corporate IT departments). This transition has introduced a new set of vulnerabilities to plant networks that used to operate island of automation. AlertEnterprise is the only software that can uncover security threats across the IT systems, physical access controls and industrial controls without adversely impacting the performance or reliability of the industrial process. We do this by interfacing with process related middleware like OSIsoft to access real-time parameters. We can also include data from specialized log management systems that can deliver information directly from field devices like PLCs, RTUs, and process applications called Distributed Control Systems (DCS). Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are at the heart of collecting all this data and managing the operation of a very broad range of instruments, sensors, switches, valves, gauges, servo control motors, pumps, alarms, relays and communications gear. AlertEnterprise software can uncover blended threats across all these areas to detect and prevent unintentional or malicious incidents before they happen.

AlertEnterprise Sponsors ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) San Francisco Chapter Fall Conference
AlertEnterprise has sponsored the ISACA San Francisco Chapter Fall Conference. AlertEnterprise showcased its AlertInsight Risk Visualization Solution. Business managers first and foremost need to remain focused on delivering operational results. They don’t want to worry about the underlying technical details -- such as security and controls governing access to data, assets, and physical locations. In a worst-case scenario, the business side finds that IT authorization processes take too long. Reports of potential security violations are often technically complex and riddled with jargon, transaction codes, and confusing remediation alternatives. Unable to interpret this technical complexity, business managers must rely on IT to translate and explain, which can add hours, days, even weeks to the approval process. The larger the company, the greater the IT Security queue will be for this approval-explanation- remediation cycle. The result: complaints that IT is constraining their ability to conduct business. It is increasingly common to see marathon GRC project meetings between business and IT. IT needs to explain the technical details of the root cause of a risk (like authorization object, field, and values) for the business side to take any action. The process becomes even more complicated when the proposed remediation (such as a role change) could impact other users by accidentally removing their access and keeping them from doing their jobs. This back-and-forth exercise can go on interminably as each risk is examined and remediated. In addition, risk analysis and remediation is not a one-time event. The environment is constantly changing. User access, user roles, and system configurations are changing as business conditions change, which adds another level of complexity. To further complicate matters, auditors are now insisting on reviewing the periodic user access reviews and access re-affirmations required in regulations. This requirement puts additional pressure on an already over-burdened IT department. AlertEnterprise demonstrated how strategic alignment between Business and IT can go a long way in reducing costs for audit and assessment of risks that are faced by organizations in conducting their daily business. Employing the new visualization techniques discussed here can increase efficiency, insure compliance with regulations while eliminating lengthy discussions to remediate risks.
